Bedwetting: Can Chiropractic Provide Much Needed Hope?

Bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis) can be tiring for both kids and parents. Mom and Dad typically struggle with trying to uncover a cause while still remaining calm and supportive of their child. Children can become embarrassed, depressed, or worried. It’s frustrating for everyone involved and there is very little that conventional medicine can do about bedwetting.

If your family is struggling with bedwetting and you’ve tried all the advice and the lifestyle changes that have been recommended to you without success, it might be time to visit a chiropractor.

Chiropractic care has the potential to reduce and even eliminate episodes of bedwetting that are caused by nerve interference.

Nerve Interference and Bedwetting

When we sleep the body regulates itself to keep carbon dioxide levels in check. This is called the Phrenic Reflex. When there is nerve interference in the upper neck, the Phrenic Reflex breathing pattern is disrupted. Carbon dioxide can build up. When carbon dioxide levels get too high the smooth muscles of the body relax, one of which is the valve responsible for bladder control. When this muscle relaxes too much, bedwetting occurs.

Specific chiropractic adjustments to the third, fourth, and fifth cervical vertebrae target the nerves that are being impinged, restoring proper function to the body and the Phrenic Reflex. The end result is improved bladder control and reduced or eliminated bedwetting.

Spinal subluxations can go undetected for years because they can exist without causing back pain. Without pain, many people don’t think to take a look at the spine to address other problems in the body. But a spinal subluxation does not always cause back pain and can have a very strong effect on other conditions, like bedwetting. Subluxations are less about pain and more about causing nerve interference, which causes problems in other parts of the body.

A chiropractor looks at the function of the entire body, not just the area of concern. This allows us to make connections between seemingly unrelated complaints. Through spinal manipulation, we are able to restore proper form and function to the body, which allows the body to heal itself naturally and function as nature intended.
